Both Freshman teams took 5th place! Macy and Adria both had top 10 finishes in the Girls Freshman race as well! I also want to note our boys JV team. They approached coach a few days before the race and told him they wanted to race in the Boys Varsity Division I race. Although they knew they were sacrificing possibly medals, they wanted to run faster times. It paid off, and three of them ran PR's! Firnally, I want to mention our Varsity boys. They ran in the elite division at the race. To my knowledge, this was the first time in school history that we have had a team run elite. They all ran amazing, and placed 6th out of 25 teams! This performance is very impressive, and highlights how far our boys have come in the past few years. Ryan Barna, Harrison Roberts, and Nick Barna all ran PR's, and Ryan broke the school record in the 5K running 15:46! Congrats to him! -Brady Corrigan Grizz - Sorry about the late post this week. The Mile High Classic was a great success again! Both the boys and girls took 1st and nearly every runner ran a PR! This might be because the course was slightly short, but with the elevation gain the two probably canceled each other out. The boys won with 17 points (almost a perfect score) and the girls won with 36 points. The boys' outstanding performance also made Dyestat for the Idaho news of the week! The article said: Idaho At the Mile High Classic in Challis, twins Ryan and Nick Barna from Skyline went 1-2 and were part of a 17-point domination. Ryan Barna ran 16:00.6 for the win. Congrats to the Barnas and the entire boys team once again! Now to the bigger news. This week is the Bob Firman Invitational as most of you probably know. In case you forgot your itinerary, I will post it here. Also, tomorrow morning there is a team breakfast at Coach Schmidt's house. The breakfast is at 7:00 am. His address is 2508 Harold Drive. Then at 9:00 am the bus for Boise leaves. Runners are supposed to at the north side of the school by 8:45 am. Let's all have a great weekend and run fast!

"What is it we want our hips to do? The key elements are balance and drive. Our torsos balance on our hips, and the hips are the fulcrums of the leg levers driving our bodies forward. If they are not working properly, the legs are unable to provide optimal power and speed...
It all starts with proper posture, the experts say [which is why Coach Erica says the back muscles are so important too]. Proper posture is what makes some athletes look graceful and light on their feet, balanced and agile... When we start to run taller, become more balanced and feel the float of an efficient hip drive, we are one step closer to running like the elites." "One group of muscles that runners should never ignore, however, is the back. Your back keeps you upright and good posture helps you remain injury-free. “Runners need strong backs—both mid and lower backs—to stabilize the spine and pelvis,” says Dr. Richard Hansen of High Altitude Spine and Sport in Boulder, Colo. “This reduces injury risk by helping to evenly distribute the forces that are being absorbed with each step and helps to improve running economy by reducing energy lost to unnecessary body sway.” If you don’t have a strong back when you begin increasing your running volume, it can eventually lead to tissue breakdown and injury—especially in the lower leg and hip—according to Hansen."

Great job at the Tiger/Grizz Invitational! We had a lot of outstanding performances. About half of our runners ran PR's. Here are the impressive team results. JV girls took 7th out of 23 teams JV boys took 5th out of 27 teams Varsity girls took 6th out of 13 teams Varsity boys took 1st out of 14 teams I also want to note a few outstanding personal bests ran this past week. Ryan Barna ran 16:25 Dallin Hart ran 17:01 Eric Johnson ran 18:38 Zachary Lott ran 19:37 Breanne Herrmann ran 20:38 Macy Olsen ran 21:06 Megan Reed ran 23:00 Now, lets look ahead to our meet in Challis this Saturday. Here is the meet information, taken from Coach Erica on the Facebook page. "Departure time on Saturday is 9:30 am (be there at 9:15 please). Bring a LUNCH since we won't be stopping anywhere for food. We will be running at Challis Hot Springs. If you want to go swimming after your race, remember to bring $5, a swim suit, a towel, and a change of clothes. Girls run at 12:45, boys run at 1:15. There is also an open/community race at 1:45 for any parents or family members who want to run. Lastly, the bus is going to be PACKED, so if you are a parent who is driving up to watch the race, let us know if you can take any athletes with you. Thanks!" She also mentioned that the bus should get home around 7 or 8. This race is an all day event. Make sure to stay hydrated this week and get plenty of sleep. Mile High is always a fun meet to run at. The course is 2 identical laps. The runners cross a creek a total of four times in the race, and run up a small hill twice. Our team has ran very well here in the past, so have fun and go for a PR! If you have any other questions, you can ask them here on the blog. Click on the blue " X Comments" link above this post to do so. -Brady Corrigan Grizz -
Great job at the Cardinal Classic this past Saturday. We had a lot of fast times, and the team is off to a great start. We have the Tiger/Grizz Invitational this Friday, September 9. Here is the schedule: Mens Races 5,000 Meters Junior Varsity 12:40 PM 5,000 Meters Varsity A 2:00 PM 5,000 Meters Varsity B 2:00 PM 2,500 Meters Middle School 3:00 PM Womens Races 5,000 Meters Junior Varsity 12:00 PM 5,000 Meters Varsity A 1:20 PM 5,000 Meters Varsity B 1:20 PM 2,500 Meters Middle School 2:30 PM The racers are excused from school at 11:00 on Friday. There is no team bus! This means each runner is responsible for getting themselves to the meet on time. If your parents can't give you a ride, ask an upperclassmen for a ride. I am sure they would be happy to help. There will be 35 high school teams in this race, so the competition will be tough. Expect a little pushing to take place. Lastly, I wanted to get everyone caught up on some cross country news that has taken place so far. Our boys team is the pre-season #1 team in the state! Congrats to you all! For my Senior Project, I decided I would make a website for the cross country team. Today, Labor Day, I am happy to announce it is ready for use! I hope this website can be used as a central point of contact for all Skyline Cross Country information and updates. I will be talking with the coaches in the next few days, and showing them how to post on this website. My goal is for every handout that is passed out at practice to also be uploaded here in case parents are confused about something, or their runner lost the paper (it happens). I know that the team Facebook page serves a lot of these functions, but I have noticed that over half of the team either doesn't have Facebook, or hasn't joined the page yet. This website is much easier to reach because once you know the URL, you don't have to be signed into an account to view the information posted here. However, on the home page I have a button that will take you to the Facebook page as well. I also have buttons linking to the team Instagram page (managed by Coach Erica), athletic.net (the website with race times, directions, and athlete profiles), and Dyestat (a national high school cross country and track website with countless articles, rankings, and other interesting reads if you are an information nerd like myself). As you navigate around the site, you will see that I have the schedule posted, as well as team statistics and history. I gathered these stats from the team booklets that Coach Schmidt passes out to each runner at the team banquet each year. To keep the page looking neat, I only posted the fastest times, or most recent team accomplishments. However, if you click on the blue links at the end of each section, a word document will download onto your computer with the full results. Click "enable editing" for best viewing results. I hope you all find these statistics as interesting as I do. I should also mention that I am hoping that the coaches (probably Coach Erica) will be the ones posting these blogs to the website each week. However, I may be posting on here also. But i hope that this website will continue long after I graduate in the spring. Lastly, I want to talk about the "Coaches" tab located in the top right corner of the website. As I am writing this, it isn't complete. But once I show this to the coaches, I am hoping they can all write a bio about themselves that will include their general information as well as their running career. I think contact information would also be useful to put in this, but I will let the coaches decide. If you notice any errors or have any suggestions about what I could add to make this website better, feel free to tell me. I am new to this, and much of making this website was trial and error. Thank you for reading, and I hope this website can make life easier and more enjoyable for all parents and runners on the team. - Brady Corrigan |
